On the Roads That Echo

Through Sand and Snow is Charlie Walker’s four-year bicycle journey through Europe, Asia and Africa that captures adventurers’ and bike enthusiasts’ imagination alike. While neither travelogue nor sports biography, Through Sand and Snow manages a fine balancing act between gripping tales from such an exhausting journey while vividly portraying its lands and people encountered with empathy and perception.

Bree is investigating the discovery of a dead man in a remote roadside ditch when she becomes distracted by media and county politics, pushing her to close the case quickly as serial killers could damage reelection chances. Echo Road marks Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh’s first joint mystery novel.

The Loneliest Road

“Go West,” was the advice in the 1800s, drawing many young men in pursuit of gold and silver veins rumoured to exist there. Many thousands followed suit enthralled by stories of abundant mines of both commodities. Route 50 still bears this name today as America’s Loneliest Road but by Australian outback standards is much busier compared to Australia. Running through Nevada from Lake Tahoe westward to Baker in the east it encapsulates both history and soul of America itself.

At Middlegate Station’s dusty parking lot and after gazing upon its wooden plaque indicating its population as 17, I can sense that The Loneliest Road’s spirit still lives on. There are still beautiful places like Eureka, known as “The Friendliest Town on The Loneliest Road,” that thrived during a silver boom of its own in 19th-century. Now filled with luxurious brick buildings – including Eureka Opera House and Italianate city courthouse – which wouldn’t look out of place in any larger American city.

Cold Springs Pony Express Station was constructed out of native rocks and mud in 1860 as a reminder of California’s Wild West past. Today it remains active.
