The advertising watchdog has said that the fashion company ZARA published “socially irresponsible” pictures of women who looked too thin.
There were two product listings on the ZARA website in May. One had a picture of a model wearing an oversized pocket shirt, while the other had a picture of a model wearing a voluminous combination shortdress.
One person complained to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) that the ads were irresponsible since the models looked too thin.
ZARA said that the models have worked for well-known and respected fashion labels and that both models had medical certificates that showed they were in excellent health.
They insisted that they had not altered any of the pictures, except for minor adjustments to the lighting and colors.
ZARA said that after getting the complaint, it changed the product listings and took down the individual pictures.
The ASA noted that the low-cut design of the clothing in the first commercial called attention to the model’s upper chest area, making her collarbone stand out.
Furthermore, the way she held her arms while wearing a loose top made it look like her arms, shoulders, and chest were quite tiny.
The ASA said, “In general, we thought that the model’s pose and the clothes she wore in the ad made it look like she was too thin.”
The watchdog noted that the second image’s design and lighting, as well as the model’s choice of clothing, made it look like the model was unhealthily thin.
The ASA declared, “Because of the reasons above, we decided that the models looked too thin and that the ads were irresponsible.”
A ZARA UK spokeswoman stated, “We are aware of the ASA’s decision after one person complained about two pictures on our website. We took them down when the ASA told us to.”
“We are dedicated to responsible content and follow strict rules and guidelines when choosing models and taking pictures of them, as well as when choosing images.”
ZARA commercials were banned because they showed models who were “unhealthily thin.”
