The People
Nomadic lifestyle offers many rewards but also has its challenges, including keeping in touch with friends and family who no longer reside nearby. Nomads may become anxious that long-distance friendships may fade or no longer need them as time goes on.
Modern digital nomads differ from their ancient predecessors in that their travel goals go beyond food and safety; rather they travel in order to broaden their horizons, challenge their perspectives, and deepen their understanding of the world.
Bryony describes how difficult it was for her to settle in any one place for extended periods. After years of traveling and searching, she finally settled down in Copenhagen – the place that has now become her permanent home.

The Food
Nomadic food patterns don’t just apply to terrestrial travel: astronauts also consume nomadic dishes in space. Alwin Chubash examines NASA’s space program through the lens of food. At first, engineers focused on keeping equipment functioning in space by providing astronauts with tasteless dry food (2021: 74-77). Traveling as a digital nomad exposes you to new cultures and traditions that can significantly expand your worldview. Through these new experiences, they force you to accept diversity, learn from others and develop empathy for all people living there.
Though living the digital nomad lifestyle may appear glamorous to influencers, its reality can sometimes be hard. Headley recalls times when his crew were so financially strapped they could barely afford basic needs; during those times they relied on strangers’ kindness in order to survive difficult periods.
Asian women participating in our study found digital nomadism to be an ideal way to pursue autonomy while also challenging traditional societal expectations. Unfortunately, they also encountered numerous difficulties on their journeys, including internalized racism and gender discrimination. Seiko and Zhu described their difficulties being recognised as digital nomads within male-dominated societies while Ishana described her joy at making friends among local Nepali women.
The Lifestyle
Digital nomads often find that their lifestyle enables personal development. It may help untangle complex relationships, pursue academic and intellectual advancement or push themselves in extreme sports activities. Seiko left behind her family behind to explore nomadic living and gain the freedom and independence she desired as an independent individual with greater self-awareness and independence.
Women featured in this study also reflected on how their nomadic journeys had afforded them privilege and transformation. For instance, Ishana relearned her Asian roots by prioritising personal happiness over traditional societal expectations or family culture demands.

The Future
